Charles  DeShocka

Savannah-Charles DeShocka, 94, died Monday, December 04, 2006 at his daughter’s home, under the care of Hospice Savannah.

Mr. DeShocka lived most of his life in Thunderbolt. In 1952, he was awarded the fourth annual “Mr. Thunderbolt” trophy for his outstanding work on behalf of the township and for his work in aiding the Blessing of the Fleet and furthering the town’s volunteer fire department. In December of 1971, he was installed into the Bessemer High Alumni Letterman’s Club Hall of Fame. He was an outstanding football player and an enthusiast of all sports. He worked in the seafood business for over fifty years and was the owner of Quality Seafood Company in Thunderbolt where he was affectionately known as “Captain Charlie”. For many years, he was a communicant of Nativity of our Lord Catholic Church in Thunderbolt and for the past six years at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church on Wilmington Island. He was preceded in death by his parents, Salvatore and Maria Antonia DeShocka, a brother, Nick DeShocka and his loving wife, Frances Olliff DeShocka.

Surviving are his daughter and son-in-law, Rosemary DeShocka and Henry F. Ambos, Jr. of Savannah; two grandsons and their wives, Charles Henry Ambos and Tori of Lexington, SC and David Francis Ambos and Julie of Key West, FL; three great-grandchildren, Mary Grace and Matthew of Lexington, SC and Jackson of Key West, FL; two sisters, Angeline Quintero and Rosalie DeShocka, both of Birmingham, AL and several nieces and nephews.

Visitation: 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm, Wednesday, December 6, 2006 at Fox and Weeks Funeral Directors, Islands Chapel with a Christian Wake Service at 6:00 pm.

Mass of Christian Burial: 10:00 am Thursday, December 7, 2006 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church with the Reverend Patrick O’Brien, Celebrant. Pallbearers will be Charles H. Ambos, David F. Ambos, Louis G. Ambos, II, Freddy Meeks, Gordon W. “Sonny” Nelson, Jr. and Gordon W. “Buddy” Nelson, III.

Burial: Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
